I know my love

a little review for Deirdre's new CD
from Gertraut, Vienna

Some singers force their way into your ears but not so Deirdre - she is doing magic with a soft voice! This new CD by Deirdre - aptly called DEIRDRE SHANNON - is here and I put it on the CD player with a lot of expectation, but already the start was a joy:

I KNOW MY LOVE, simply described as Trad.- is so lovely and lively and Deirdre'™s voice dances her way through the tune. The question is ™and if my love leaves me, what will I do? No fear, dear singer, nobody will leave you after that song!

ARDAIGH CUAN comes next, it's in Gaelic , full of longing by someone who lives now far away from his beloved quiet land of Erin. Thanks to Matthew singing it in English I am able to understand these lyrics and Deirdre's voice enhances all the hurt that is felt. It is beautiful!

One of the most beautiful tunes comes now: ONE MORE DAY. The movie "Veronica Guerin" where this song is from is fairly heartbreaking, for it is based on reality and not fiction; Veronica Guerin - a young journalist - was murdered on the 26th of June 1996, because she went on to write about the drug-scene in Dublin, even after she was shot for the first time. Not even her family could stop her and finally she was murdered. But now people took up her concern and made it a national one. And this time laws were altered to work on the crime scene. This beautiful song ends with the words:and in the end the sun will rise on one more day I guess, we'll leave it at that.

AE FOND KISS comes next. It's another Trad.  Slow and lovely, talking about parting, it is sad and touching the heart, but after One more Day it is somehow fitting.

Another Trad. follows, lively and lovely, about GATHERING MUSHROOMS. Seems a bit of a dialect there, I don't understand the lyrics too good. ( Now what mushroom-collecting can lead to!)

The absolutely beautiful SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR follows. It is sung a capella and I think this even enhances the beauty of this quiet tune. I read about this song and its lyrics and it seems there are two versions: One for happy and one for sad occasions. But this seems to be the one, where the tragic aspect is removed and only the longing for the coming wedding-day remains.

Another favourite of mine follows: Peter Warlock's DORMI JESU, starting with the words: Lullaby, my Jesus, lullaby my son. This lovely tune was adapted by David Munro, maybe into a more modern setting, but Peter Warlock (a pseudonym for Philip Arnold Heseltine, an English composer, who died in 1930) did write a beautiful song that Mary might have sung to little Jesus. And now Deirdre has her own lovely version.

Now this next - I first heard the beautiful tune played when I heard Hamilton-Harty "Londonderry Air" played by an orchestra in the Viennese Musikverein, then “ entirely different  sung by Harry Belafonte, The Celtic Tenors, Bryn Terfel - Now it seems this Trad. we do know by heart in all it's facets. DANNY BOY is lovely, sounds a bit different from the Celtic Tenors a capella version. But I love it nevertheless, only like this it sounds more like a love-song than a song from father to son. It is equally beautiful, if a girl sings it!

APRON OF FLOWERS follows and it made me jump up and shout :This is it! For I heard Deirdre sing this lovely Trad. in November 04 at a concert in Munich, only this once, and I never forgot it, it's another one where her voice dances through the music and the lyrics. It starts with the words: I loved him and I loved her for singing it so endearing! (And let's hope she finds the wanted flower called Heartsease to give peace to her troubled mind!).

LORD OVER YOU: This is one song I don't know anything about. Funny though, I knew about the Australian song-writer Tracy Bartelle, who went to Los Angeles at the end of the eighties since about fifteen years. But I never heard any of her music. So I can just listen and try to fly high with this wonderful tune that fits Deirdre's voice so beautiful!

I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT how you broke my heart, if you stay here just a little bit longer, won't you listen to my heart.. So the lyrics start. A sad song is this one by Danny Whitten. Contemporary, I know nothing about it, being more at home in the classics, but it is beautiful.

And now follows a song that I waited for since that Munich-concert, but I managed to find the lyrics in the meantime. This trusting song from : The Quest for Camelot, it is called THE PRAYER, is absolutely beautiful and in 1999 it got the Golden Globe for "Best Song". Deirdre and Matthew sing it together, making alive this wonderful Carol Bayer Sager/David Foster song. And they make it difficult for me to listen to a version by other singers.

Already the last one, how come that loved CD always end so soon? It's NEWBORN by the twentieth century composer John Ireland, born near Manchester in 1879 . All rock you, rock you in my arms, my least little one, Christina Rossetti's beautiful poem he set into music, it is only one of the Lieder he composed after lyrics written by her and Thomas Hardy, Rupert Brooke and so on.. Lovely sung!

Now do I have a favourite? I know my love of course but I won't tell! Just go ahead, find your own most beautiful one!

And here are the lyrics for The Prayer

I pray you'll be our eyes,
and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise
in times when we don't know. Let this be our prayer,
when we lose our way.
Lead us to the place,
guide us with your grace,
To a place where we'l be safe.

La luce che tu hai
I pray we'll find your light
Nel cuore restera
And hold it in our hearts.
A ricordarci che
When stars go out each night,
Eternal stella sei

Nella mia preghiera
Let this be our prayer
Quanta fede chei
When shadows fill our day
us to a place,
guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe.

Sognamo un mondo senza piu violenza
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace, di fraternit

La forza che ci da
We ask that life be kind
Che il desiderio che
And watch us from above
Ognuno trovi amor
We hope each soul will find
intorno e dentro sei
another soul to love

Let this be our prayer,
just like every child
Need to find a place,
guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe.
Need to find a place,
guide us with your grace,
Give us faith so we'll be safe.

E la fede che
Hai acceso in noi,
sente che ci salver....
