2001-01-23 Nelson's performance a celebrated success

SligoWeekender 23.01.2001

A concert promoted by Con Brio with Tenor James Nelson and Soprano Sandra Oman accompanied by Dearbhla Collins on piano took place on January 4 in the Yeats Building.

Sandra and James harmonised very well in several duets with James showing the benefit of his experience with the Celtic Tenors - notably in the closing set of songs by Ivor Novello.

The operatic duets from Verdi ("La Traviata") and Puccini ("La Boheme") together with arias from Tchaikovsky, Mascagni and Gounod were all warmly received by the opera lovers in the audience.

James sang his own arrangement `as Gaeilge' of the old John McCormack favourite "The Snowy Breasted Pearl".

Sandra gave a ravishing account of two French songs by Reynaldo Hahn that left the audience dying to hear more of this achingly beautiful music. Also her singing of Rusalka's "O Silver Moon" by Dvorak was unforgettable.

The highlights of James Nelson's singing were the very well sung songs by Grieg and Tosti. His ability to communicate to an audience through song, even through Norwegian and Italian, mark James out as an outstanding recitalist with more than just a very fine voice. H

He combines first class singing (often understated, never forced) with excellent presence and first class communication and expression.

Without doubt we must hear him sing again in Sligo before long. The hall was filled to capacity and the audience was totally enthusiastic at the end of the evening. Performers and public mingled over a welcome glass of wine at the end of the recital.
